About our Chapter
Chapter JA, the 259th P.E.O. Chapter formed in California, was organized on January 28, 1938. It was established for working women, so met in the evenings, an unusual occurrence at that time. Since 1997, the chapter has met on Saturday mornings, still accommodating working women.
The JA members represent a variety of occupations including a psychologists, an artist, computer experts, nurses, a medical transcriptionist, a director of financial aid, a dietician, teachers and school principals, project managers, a legal secretary, an occupational therapist, a librarian, a marriage and family counselor, a behavior support specialist, a dentist, a human resources consultant, a technical writer and conference planner, an administrative secretary, an information technology consultant, a nurse anesthetist, and an estate planning attorney. Several chapter members are entrepreneurs, working as solo consultants or business owners.

The sisters of chapter JA have an assorted range of interests and hobbies, which we enjoy sharing with each other. Some of these include painting, swimming, decorating, quilting, building homes with Habitat for Humanity, volunteering, photography, scrap-booking, gardening, advocacy for women’s issues and women’s health, knitting, needlepoint, sculpture, cooking, wine tasting, camping, walking, reading, genealogy, travel, cultural activities, playing and watching sports, and cultural dancing.
We are a progressive, interesting group of women, ranging in age from 25 to 90, who work together to help other women achieve their goals.

About P.E.O.
P.E.O. is a philanthropic educational organization where women celebrate the advancement of women, educate women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans, and stewardship of Cottey College, and motivate each other to achieve their highest aspirations.
P. E. O. was formed in 1869, placing it among the oldest women’s organizations in North America.
At present there are nearly 6000 chapters with approximately 250,000 members in all 50 states, The District of Columbia, and 6 Canadian provinces.
P.E.O. owns and operates Cottey College, a fully accredited liberal arts college for women, in Nevada, Missouri.
The other P.E.O. philanthropies include the Educational Loan Fund, International Peace Scholarship, Program for Continuing Education, Scholar Awards, and Star Scholar. Over the years, more than $235 million has been provided to women for their education.
The organization is based on friendship and mutual respect, supporting each other for the common goals of raising money to assist women reach their educational goals.
